The Case for Maximalism

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that we need to be surrounded by décor that inspires us and makes us happy. Prior to the pandemic, Minimalism was all the rage. Everyone was tossing out family heirlooms and turning to dismal white colorless walls and empty rooms. Fast forward to today, when we have been trapped inside for over a year, we have come to realize our how important our surroundings are and how they affect us. This why I'm making the case for Maximalism. We spend a lot of time at home now and that could continue. Your home affects your mood. It affects your creativity. It affects your life. Its time to express yourself and create a personal art gallery just for you. Let's reject all that is Minimalist, and in turn celebrate the vibrancy of our lives. Something that truly expresses our personality. The era of expressing your sense of style loudly is here and I'm all for it and you should be too!

So, what is this thing called Maximalism you may ask?

"A little too much is just enough for me! I like opulent, Maximalist rooms, and I like to use one-of-a-kind elements."

Hutton Wilkinson Interior Designer

Well, Maximalism isn't a new design aesthetic. It's actually been around for quite sometime. It has its origins dating back to the 1890s but its been in and out of popularity as recently as the 1960s.It is a culmination of many other design styles lumped together. A lot of the aesthetic is based around the taste of the interior designer. Its taking stock of what you have and making it work in a unique way. Decor you may not think goes together might actually go together just fine. The best part about Maximalism is that it is based truly on originality. You really are the artist behind that interior design. That's what makes it so much fun. So, how do you do it? Well, here are a few key tips!

  1. Go big or go home! Big, bold prints & patterns. Go for it. Don't be shy. And by the way, sofa covers are perfect way to add that boldness to your decor!

2. Clutter is in the eye of the beholder, if you love how it looks, keep it that way. Work the quirk. By the way, coffee cups make fun decor!

3. Color, Color, Color. Get loud, get vibrant. Rock that wall paint.

4. Mix and match your decor. Old and new go together! Love that modern artwork but you don't think it goes with your home? Well, it does. Get it, put it on your wall.
